REMEMBRANCE SUNDAY 2017: BRIGG VOLUNTEERS SET TO CARRY OUT ROAD CLOSURES INSTEAD OF POLICE

For the second successive year, Humberside Police is not expected to provide officers to deal with closing and later reopening major roads in Brigg on  Remembrance Sunday (November 12) before and after the wreath-laying at the Monument war memorial beside the A18.
However, it is thought the force may lay a wreath this year.
Last November, Humberside Police ended a long tradition of providing officers for road safety purposes on and near the A18. Instead, volunteer marshals had to be organised to undertake this important task without which the dignified ceremony in memory of The Fallen could not take place.

Similar "alternative arrangements" have had to be made this year, Brigg Town Council says.
For the benefit of townsfolk, the council has provided some timings for Sunday.
The parade having formed up in Station Road will arrive at St John's Church  from 10.35am to 10.40am, to ensure sufficient time for members to enter the church and get seated.
Churchwardens (with staves) will meet the veterans and lead the parade into church via the north and centre aisles.
The service will commence at 10.50am.
Afterwards the parade will move down to the Monument where the wreath-laying will be at noon.

Many police forces across the UK are now declining to provide officers or PCSOs to deal with Remembrance Sunday road closures. Reasons given include reduced budgets and making the best use of available resources.

The Britannia Inn, close to the Monument, will be offering a free drink to all servicemen and women on Sunday, November 12  "to say thank you" to them. They can choose between bitter, lager, house wine, J20, Pepsi or lemonade.

The reason Brigg had the Memorial service at noon, out of sync with the national 11 o'clock homage, was that, owing to manning other parades, they, the police, could only control traffic at circa 12o'clock.
Now, for whatever reason the police have now removed themselves, the time restraint has also been eliminated.
Can we now, therefore, take the obvious course and have the service at 11am?

The general consensus amongst veteran groups is, that since there is now no imposed time restriction, the Monument service should be undertaken at 11 o'clock.
