BRIGG CANDIDATES WELCOME FOR YOUTH ELECTIONS

FROM CHRIS O'ROURKE, NORTH LINCOLNSHIRE COUNCIL

North Lincolnshire is gearing up to elect its Young Mayor and Member of Youth Parliament and we are looking for candidates to put themselves forward.
The youth elections take place every two years. At the last election in February 2015, Kian Borg-Jackson from the South Axholme Academy was elected as Young Mayor and William McCullion from the Axholme Academy was elected as Member of Youth Parliament (MYP).
The Young Mayor works alongside other members of the Youth Council to represent the views and interests of young people in our area. They are often the first point of contact for local young people to get their views heard.
The Member of Youth Parliament for North Lincolnshire will represent our area on the UK Youth Parliament. They meet regularly with other MYPs to hold debates and plan campaigns at venues including the House of Commons.
To stand at the next youth election in February 2017, you must be aged between 11 and 17 (or 25 if you have an additional need) and either live, work or go to school or college in North Lincolnshire. Candidates will be expected to become members of the North Lincolnshire Youth Council.
Coun David Rose, Cabinet Member for Children, Families and Learning, said: “The Youth Council does fantastic work championing the views of young people in North Lincolnshire and making their voices heard. The Young Mayor and Member of Youth Parliament are true ambassadors for young people and work hard to highlight the positive contributions that young people make to the community.
“As Kian’s and William’s time in their roles comes to an end I would like to thank them for their dedication and hard work during the past year and a half. They have both worked tirelessly on behalf of all North Lincolnshire’s young people and will leave big shoes to fill!
“If you believe you’re up to the challenge and want to make a real difference in your community, get yourself a candidate application pack now.”
