BRIGG GAINS LOCK ON RIVER

We’d never noticed these chains on the brick wall beside the Old River Ancholme in Brigg before.
Have they been there long? What’s the  purpose of the metalwork?
There’s a shiny new lock at the end of the chain nearest the County Bridge.
The chains stretch from the County Bridge as far as the old Lidl store.

The chains have been there for ages and ages, Nige.
I believe that they're there as a safety device.....The brickwork of the wharfage is high in the locality and if someone fell into the water near the bridge, the chains offer the unfortunate victim something to which to cling....
