It was good to see Freeman of Brigg, Tom Glossop, and his wife Maureen back in the Angel Suite during a Brigg Town Council meeting on Monday night, if only as members of the public observing the proceedings.
Tom went along to stress the need to replace a missing university thesis.
It featured Percy Grainger, the Australian composer and musician who came to town in the early 20th century and played a big part in getting national recognition for the traditional Brigg Fair folk song, with help from a certain Mr Taylor, who sang it at our Music Festival, and a certain Mr Delius, renowned composer, whose setting of the tune is still played today at classical concerts.
Tom hopes the author of the thesis, Jane O'Brien, can be located to give her blessing to a copy coming Brigg's way at some point.
"This is a very important document for this town," said Tom. He thought the original copy of her thesis might have gone missing when Brigg library moved to new premises, but stressed that once they had Ms O'Brien's permission the cost of replacing the document would not be great.
Coun Rob Waltham, who is a cabinet member of North Lincolnshire Council, thanked Tom for his efforts and said he would keep a check on progress.
Tom Glossop is Brigg's only Freeman - an honour bestowed on him to mark very long service to the town.
