FISHING FOR COMPLIMENTS IN BRIGG - DON'T TELL HIM PIKE!

We were pleased to see young people - male and female - enjoying a spot of angling on the Old River Ancholme, in Brigg, the other afternoon.
They were trying their luck on what anglers used to call the Spring's Stretch. This term dates back to when the famous preserves factory still dominated the riverside at this point.
We stopped off to chat to a senior angler - well-known in Brigg. Last time we saw him at this location, a few years ago, he hauled in a good-sized pike, which we photographed for him.
However, we are told it's a bit early for pike; your chances of landing one increase as the weather gets colder and the last of the weed disappears.
Many people who like the Ancholme are looking forward to work starting on the newly improved towpath between Brigg and South Ferriby.
