RAINWORTH MINERS' WELFARE 1 BRIGG TOWN FC 3

MATCH REPORT BY BOB TAYLOR

Brigg Town FC made four team changes for their away game at Rainworth Miners’ Welfare, introducing Dan Waring in goal, Jamie Coulson up front, Anthony Bowsley back in central mid-field and Fabio Snow on the left wing. The home team were soon on the offensive and dominated the first twenty minutes of the game, stretching the Brigg defenders to the limit without being able to get the vital scoring touch in front of goal.
As early as third minute, Adam Murray’s shot was deflected from the goal area for a corner kick but this was cleared and Brigg responded with Liam Dickens finding room to see his weak strike collected by home ‘keeper James Martin.  Then the home team’s Adam Murray, on loan from Mansfield Town   moved  the ball out to Jamie Brown, but his cross went over Dan Waring’s crossbar. Brigg responded again but Jamie Coulson couldn’t quite reach the through ball and it was collected by the goal- keeper. After fifteen minutes , Jamie Clarke headed wide from a long throw by Matt Varley and then Jamie Brown’s right wing cross was blocked.
Continuing on the offensive,  a  corner kick by Ricky Hanson  was punched narrowly over his own bar by Dan Waring and  Nathan Modest struck the corner kick wide of the post. Brigg Gradually got more into the game with mid-field passing movements and created a scoring chance when Chas Fisher and Paul Grimes worked the ball well on the right wing before it was crossed into the penalty area for Liam  Dickens to head just wide Clearly encouraged, a long goal kick from Dan Waring found Paul Grimes racing clear into the Wrens’ penalty area but his shot went wide of the goal. Four minute from the half time whistle, Brigg took the lead when Paul Grimes worked the ball into the path of WILLIAM PEERS and the young player struck a fine shot into the corner of the net from twelve yards.  Brigg almost added to the score when another Paul  Grimes snap shot from outside the area was well saved by James Martin.
Rainworth substituted Greg Archer for Matt Varley at half time and started the second half by again taking the game to Brigg. From a corner kick, Jamie Clarke’s header went past he upright post.  After ten minutes of the second half, Wrens’ Scott Rickards replaced Nathan Modest and soon afterwards Adam Murray fired a shot over the bar. Brigg looked increasingly confident in possession against slow moving defenders and posed their own questions for the home team. Jamie Coulson missed out on a good opportunity with his shot going out for a corner kick.  Brigg increased the lead after sixty-four minutes when Greg Archer’s  attempted  header back to his goal-keeper was intercepted by PAUL GRIMES, who seized possession ahead of the goalkeeper before guiding the ball into the back of the net.  Three minutes later, Rainworth quickly reduced the arrears when a right wing cross from Ricky Hanson found JAMIE CLARKE able to head the ball into the far corner of Dan Waring’s goal.  Fortunately, Brigg reacted positively and following their next attack down the right wing another two minutes later, JAMIE COULSON won the ball from a throw-in and worked his way into the penalty area before knocking it into the corner of the net.
Brigg looked comfortable with their two goal lead as the home team became more frustrated in search of something from the game and a mid-field incident in the 82nd minute resulted in Adam Murray being shown a red card for retaliation against Anthony Bowsley. From the free kick outside the Brigg penalty area with Bowsley receiving treatment off the pitch, Ricky Hanson’s free-kick  hit the upright.
Nevertheless, Brigg held on to secure their first win and points of the season  and next face Carlton Town away on Saturday afternoon in the F.A. Challenge Cup competition.
