BANGING ON ABOUT BRIGG BUSES

Seeing an evening Hornsby bus in Brigg - drawing up at the bus stop near the White Horse - left me wondering how many years it is since Cary Lane was vetoed after dark because of cases of threatening behaviour and vandalism.
There were real issues back then with large, troublesome groups youths. But things quietened down and seemingly got back to normal long ago.
You'd have thought a complete return to Cary Lane would save a bit of fuel on the extra journey either side of Barnard Avenue and round The Monument. It would also be a bit more convenient for some passengers, although not all.
Of course it's entirely up to the bus company, or companies, where they operate. But shouldn't someone in authority (police, council, neighbourhood action team?) have a word with the management and ask them politely whether it's time to reconsider?

COURTESY COUNTS ON BRIGG ROADS

It's heartening how many motorists on Bigby Road in Brigg waive through fellow drivers waiting to exit St Helen's Road. Traffic backs up quite often at this spot, generally because of queues on the A18 near The Monument. If it wasn't for the generosity of many road-users on the A1084, Brigg motorists could find themselves stuck in St Helen's Road for a long time, notably early morning/late afternoon/busy Saturdays.
We've put this question before to council highway chiefs: Would a mini-roundabout at the junction of Bigby Road and St Helen's Road provide a solution?
This is an A-road, after all. Go to Scunthorpe or Ashby and minor roads there - even on housing estates - were given mini-roundabouts years ago. Good examples: Ashby High Street, Riddings estate, West Common Lane (leading to John Leggott College).
Clearly there's no bar on putting mini-roundabouts on A-roads in the Brigg area - there's one at Scawby Brook.
We're flattered that Coun Nigel Sherwood - Cabinet member for highways and neighbourhoods at North Lincolnshire Council - has picked up on some of the suggestions made by Brigg Blog since he came to power last year. Perhaps he'll also consider running this one past his traffic management team.

BRIGG MATTERS TO NEWSLETTER TEAM

Our household's copy of Brigg Matters magazine/newsletter (No 26 - Spring 2012) was delivered over the weekend, with a nice, colourful picture of the recent Brigg Balloon Race on the front page, taken by Ken Harrison.
Looking through the events listings, we noted Brigg District Lions' Beer Festival, May 10-12, and immediately reached for the wall calendar to pencil it in.
Brigg Matters is now edited by Emma May Smith who can be contacted by email  briggmatters@yahoo.co.uk

BRIGG BLOG REFLECTS ON COUNTY BRIDGE IMPROVEMENT

Brigg Blog took this tranquil picture of the Old River Ancholme yesterday, from the restored walkway on the Cadney side of the County Bridge, reopened last year by North Lincolnshire Council. Riverside Mews is on the left, the Nelthorpe Arms beer garden to the right and Ancholme Rowing Club's boathouse just right of centre in the mid-distance.

BRIGG COUNCIL TAX IN PERSPECTIVE

As I was posting a list of council tax charges for 2012/13 onto the Brigg People website earlier, it struck me that I am now paying considerably more in council tax than I earned (gross) in an entire year when I started paid employment in 1974.
All in all, North Lincolnshire Council, which takes most of what we pay as householders, gives pretty decent value for money as far as I'm concerned, with highways, street lighting, refuse collection and street cleaning, schools, etc.
On the latter topic, I noticed Lol - Brigg's long-serving, brush-and-shovel neighbourhood services man - over the border in Scawby Brook the other day. Seemed like he'd been visiting Ancholme Leisure Centre.
How many miles does he cover in an average week?
Ken Harrison took this pic of Lol on the River Ancholme towpath some time ago.

WHO DO U-TURN TO FOR SOLUTION?

Brigg Blog knows that North Lincolnshire Council is having a look at whether road safety measures might be necessary on Bigby Road, Brigg, following our earlier posts about how vehicles access the parking bays outside the mail sorting office.
Since our original scribblings on this topic we've kept a regular eye on things and have spotted that a number of drivers have discovered it is possible, in smaller cars, to do a complete U-turn from one side of Bigby Road into the parking bays right outside the Post Office.
As there's a bend in Bigby Road just a few yards further along, near the former Prep School, it's to be hoped that all the U-turners look very carefully before undertaking this admittedly legal procedure.
These short-stay parking bays - on both sides of Bigby Road - are very welcome and much-used.

The meeting on Monday (Feb 27) starts at 7.30pm in the Angel Suite.
At the beginning the usual 15 minutes will be set aside for interested members of the public to go along and ask questions.

PLEASE THINK BEFORE YOU PARK IN BRIGG

Brigg would welcome drivers of commercial vehicles putting a bit more thought into parking.
Earlier today there was a white van parked on Bigby Road - two wheels on the verge, two on the A1084 - with hazard lights flashing.
Sadly, its position was such that it made it impossible for drivers trying to exit St Helen's Road to see what was coming from the direction of the level crossing.
Also this morning we observed a huge double-trailer truck, carrying foreign numberplates, parked up on Wrawby Road, just short of the junction with Glanford Road, stopping the free flow of traffic on one lane of the A18, near The Monument.
We think the driver could have been unsure of his location and had nipped off to seek directions.
We know that the vast majority of people who drive commercial vehicles - from shop runabouts to huge trucks - do observe the highway code and motoring laws of the land.
But you see many cases in Brigg which suggest some drivers believe the fact they are delivering to, or working at, a particular address gives them the right to park as near as possible to the entrance - regardless of obstructing the free flow of traffic...and even the free flow of pedestrians.
Now a few more thoughts on the long-running saga of vehicles entering Brigg's town centre pedestrian area.
The other night we saw a van call at commercial premises in Wrawby Street, observed the driver unlock the door and go in, then come out a moment later carrying a small document holdall (about A3 size).  He got in his van and drove off.
Is that OK? Or do you think he should have been using the Old Courts Road car park and stretching his legs for 100 yards (round trip) to avoid bringing a vehicle into the centre of town.
This morning we watched a security guard take his special van into the town centre and emerge from a bank carrying what we took to be a metal cashbox.  Even I have to conceded that's perfectly acceptable - on the grounds of commonsense and crime prevention.
Afternoon update: Van Man on Barnard Avenue (busy A18) was parked slightly on the road but mainly on the footpath. With the back door open it did not leave much room for pedestrians to squeeze by.

BRIGG YOUNGSTERS CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE

If you are a young person in Brigg who wants to make a difference then the forthcoming Youth Elections are the perfect opportunity for you. Don’t miss the chance to have your say.  But you will need to step forward before next Tuesday.
Young people aged between 11 and 18 can have a voice on important issues in North Lincolnshire by standing for the Youth Elections in May where North Lincolnshire’s Young Mayor and Member of Youth Parliament (MYP) will be elected.
A Young Mayor is elected by their peers to represent the views and interests of young people. The Young Mayor will be a serving member of the North Lincolnshire Youth Council.
They will serve a one-year term; some of their duties will include everything from attending the annual Youth Debate and acting as a role model to promoting mutual respect and raising awareness of the Youth Council.
The Member of Youth Parliament for North Lincolnshire stands to represent every young person in the area. Their work is mainly based on local issues that young people think need improving.
During their term of office, the Member of Youth Parliament works with their local MPs, councillors and youth groups on the issues of greatest concern to their constituents.
They will be a member of the Youth Council and work alongside the Young Mayor to bring matters of local concern to regional and possibly national attention.
If you have what it takes to represent the views and interests of young people in North Lincolnshire complete an expression of interest form.
For more information or to complete the form visit the children and young people pages on the council website, www.northlincs.gov.uk
You can also contact Sarah Eales on 01724 296869 or email sarah.eales@northlincs.gov.uk
The closing date for expressions of interest is Tuesday, February 21.
Young people can get involved in the Youth Council at anytime even if becoming a Young Mayor or Member of Youth Parliament isn’t for you.
Coun Rob Waltham (Brigg and Wolds), Cabinet  Member for Adult and Children’s Services at North Lincolnshire Council (PICTURED ABOVE), said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for young people in North Lincolnshire to have their say on important issues and represent other young people in the area.
“It is the first time that North Lincolnshire will have a Young Mayor to work alongside the Member of Youth Parliament. This will provide invaluable experience for young people and allow them to raise their aspirations. It’s essential that young people have a voice both regionally and nationally.”

BRIGG HOMES AND SHOPS PLAN WITHDRAWN

A Brigg town centre planning application that created considerable interest has been withdrawn.
Planning permission was sought for the erection of a mixed use development comprising eight town houses, two maisonettes, four flats and three shops on land to the rear of 5-6 Market Place.
However, North Lincolnshire Council has now been informed that the application has been withdrawn.
The application for conservation area consent of existing buildings behind 5-6 Market Place has NOT been withdrawn and remains "under consideration" with North Lincolnshire Council.
Consulted as part of the planning process, Brigg Town Council has raised no objection to the demolition.
However, there has been one objection from a Brigg resident, pointed out the close proximity to a listed building.

BRIGG MIGHT WELCOME FLAT RATE FOR THE JOB!

Would Brigg town centre benefit from a 'living above the shop' proposal announced by the National Association of Estate Agents (NAEA)?
It is calling on the Government to consider transforming vacant high street retail property into much-needed housing in certain areas.
Peter Bolton King, Chief Executive of the NAEA said: “With the Government still yet to formally respond to Mary Portas’ review of the high street, swift action from local authorities and forward-thinking developers is crucial to revive the UK’s town and city centres.
“Commercial property owners are facing high business rates for buildings that no-one occupies. Therefore, in the right circumstances, converting these buildings for residential use could have an aesthetic and economic benefit. However, such renovations are not simple undertakings. We advise that a thorough evaluation of the work involved is carried out beforehand to avoid additional cost burdens."
The NAEA goes on to make specific reference to market towns,
Many Brigg shops already have flats above them - but not all.  And, in the current economic climate, any money made available by the Government, in support of conversions, would be gratefully received.

BRIGG VALUATION SESSIONS STILL UP AND RUNNING

Brigg attic discoveries and inherited family items can still be taken along for valuation by local experts.
Sessions are held each Thursday morning, from 9.30am at the Angel Suite Lounge. That's downstairs (lift available if you need it).
We are issuing this reminder after a helpful comment from Coun Jenny Bell during a recent Brigg Town Council committee meeting in the Lounge, as town councillors we discussing regular bookings of the Angel.
Two questions were prompted by Jenny's comment and the brief discussion that followed, involving other members of the committee.
Does everyone in Brigg know about these valuation sessions? Would it be good to issue a reminder?
Brigg Blog made a mental note, and in the past week we've twice had items brought to our attention by members of the public who've come into the possession of items they would like to have valued.
Some Brigg folk may have drawn the wrong conclusion following the closure of Brown and Co's Salerooms, off Old Courts Road.

BRIGG RACE FANS CAN ENJOY CIRCUS SUNDAY

Many Brigg people enjoy a day at the Lincolnshire races. And in addition to the horses this coming Sunday at the Market Rasen course, spectators will encounter jugglers, stilt walkers, face painters and balloon modellers on ‘Circus Sunday’ racing day.
There is every incentive for youngsters – who are admitted free of charge – to persuade their parents to come along early because the first 100 children through the gates will each receive a free bag of circus sweets.
The goodies come courtesy of Garnets Traditional Confectionary which has an outlet in the Tattersalls Enclosure.
Circus Jim will be on course too with his ‘have-a-go’ circus workshop.
After the abandonment of the first February fixture due to the wintry weather, newly appointed temporary clerk of the course, Robert Bellamy, oversees the track for the first time.
Robert retired as a professional jockey in 2001 – and has been clerk at a number of racecourses.  His career as a jockey included a Grand National victory - on Trinitro in the Norwegian version in 1999, and it was on that horse he also had one of his two rides in the Grand National at Aintree, though sadly the partnership got no further than the first fence.
Sunday, February 19: Premier Members £26; County Enclosure £19; Tattersalls £14; Family Enclosure £9.  Accompanied children under 18 admitted free of charge.  Parking free.
The first of seven races is at 1.40pm, and gates open from 11.30am.  The feature race is the Mark Suckling Novices’ Chase.

BRIGG MIGHT LIKE TO FLY THE FLAG

Brigg no longer boasts a flagpole on the balcony of the Angel.
With celebrations for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee coming along in the Market Place in June, it would be good to see the Union Flag flying proudly from this loft vantage point.
It wouldn’t be much bother, or expense, to put the old one back, if it has just been removed for safe-keeping – or, if not, to provide a new one.
As our picture shows, the once private Angel Hotel is now in the ownership of North Lincolnshire Council and the base for office staff or varying ranks and functions.
To the rear of the Angel, Brigg is to lose some public parking spaces for almost two months.
North Lincolnshire Council has given notice that 11 bays at the Angel car park, off Elwes Street, will be withdrawn from February 17 to May 8.
This is for allow a temporary site compound in connection with changes being made within the Angel building, where there are plans for a Heritage Centre and  relocated library.
We spotted a notice about this pinned to a signpost near the Angel while we were there to photograph the new Brigg Town Council letterbox in the Rotuna.
This is because the existing letterbox, in North Lincolnshire Council’s part of the Angel complex, is expected to disappear during the forthcoming ground floor alterations.
Just round the corner, the Brigg Town Council noticeboard looks smart, as does the sign showing visitors where to locate the authority’s office.

WOULD BRIGG BACK FILM SHOWS?

Would Brigg folk like to take in old-style film shows in the Angel Suite?
That was a question posed to town councillors at a meeting of the Property and Services Committee this week.
Coun Chris Dyson - pictured above for Brigg Blog by Ken Harrison - floated the idea, saying villages like Scotton staged them. He suggested it might be worth trying a couple in Brigg.
Town Clerk Jeanette Woollard said the idea had been considered before without being positively received.
Angel Suite Manager Karen Deeley offered to look into the idea.
Brigg, of course, lost its Cinema - in Wrawby Street, near the White Horse - in the mid-1960s.
It fell victim to changing trends and TV sets coming within the price-range of virtually every household.
After "The Pictures" past into history, Brigg council rent collector Rolie Shacklock put on film shows for kids in the town.
In 2012, sitting down to watch film shows would appeal to the so-called Silver Surfer age group and be nostalgic for many folk.

BRIGG CHAPLAIN VERSES HIS OPINION

Brigg Town Mayor's Chaplain, Coun The Rev Alec Depledge, has penned an interesting and poetic response to yesterday's court ruling about prayers in council meetings, resulting from a challenge mounted down in Bideford...

EXTENSION SOUGHT TO BRIGG HOME

Planning permission in Brigg to erect a single storey extension at 4 Old School Close (near Glebe Road) is being sought from North Lincolnshire Council.

ARCHAEOLOGICAL SURVEY SUGGESTED IN BRIGG

A Brigg councillor called for an archaeological survey to be undertaken on a proposed development site near the town centre. And Coun Jackie Brock’s idea is being supported by Brigg Town Council.
Planning permission is being sought for the erection of eight town houses, two maisonettes, four flats and three shops on land to the rear of 5-6 Market Place.
North Lincolnshire Council, as the planning authority, will eventually decide whether to approve the scheme and whether a site survey is required.
But Brigg Town Council must be consulted about any planning proposals. And when this application came up for discussion at a meeting in the Angel Suite this week, Coun Jackie Brock suggested asking planners for an archaeological survey.
She said the site was near to the Market Place, where a market had been held as far back as the 13th century.
Coun Jane Kitching felt the design proposed to the rear of 5-6 Market Place was not right for the area, while Coun Mel Oades suggested a right of way should stand along Market Lane.
Town councillors on the Planning and Development Committee decided to object to the application, making reference to Market Lane access, “the fabric of the building” and the need for an archaeological survey, plus concerns about access to the proposed garages.
In addition to the so-called mixed use development of shops and houses, Conservation Area Consent is being sought for demolition of old buildings off Cary Lane, close to the electrical shop (on the extreme right of our picture).
Coun Kitching suggested they might be of some historical importance. But Coun Oades described them as an absolute eyesore and said he would be pleased to see them gone.
Various suggestions have been made about their use down the decades, including stables, workshops and store rooms.

BRIGG WEDDING FAYRE WELL WORTH A VISIT

Brigg Town Council’s Wedding Fayre, aimed at showcasing the availability of the Angel Suite for receptions and evening events, is attracting major interest.
It will be staged on Sunday, March 4, from 10am to 5.30pm.
Admission is free and complimentary refreshments will be served.
Nineteen stalls have already been snapped up by businesses providing wedding services.
They include dresses, venue dressing, suit hire, vintage crockery, flowers, catering, balloon artists, wine producers, dance tuition, underwear and limousine hire.
To find out more, call Angel Suite Manager Karen Deeley on 07903531201, write to the Angel Suite, Exchange Place, Brigg, DN20 8LB or email angelsuite@briggmarkettown.co.uk
Karen says of the Wedding Fayre: “It will give visitors the opportunity to soak up the ambience in our relaxed and friendly venue…the perfect location for wedding and family celebrations.”
A raffle will be run on the day, proceeds going to the Brigg Town Mayor’s Charity Appeal Fund.

BRIGG LIGHTS EARN CHRISTMAS CHEER

The display of town centre Christmas lights in Brigg last month gained a number of accolades, with only one minor area it is felt might be improved for 2012.
Brigg Town Council arranges and funds the communal illuminations, and carried out what amounted to a debrief session during a meeting of the Property and Services Committee held this week in the Angel Suite Lounge.
Coun Chris Dyson described the lights as fantastic. The "only weakness" in some people's eyes had been  the illuminations on the main tree in the Market Place.
Coun Ann Eardley reported suggestions that some branches had been broken.
But Coun Rob Waltham said only the had attracted any negative comments. "Everything else was cracking," he stressed.
Town Clerk Jeanette Woollard said: "Our lights are very bright, very colourful and very traditional."
Councillors confirmed the date for the 2012 lights switch-on ceremony as Friday, November 30.
It was felt that to put the switching on of the lights back a week into December would not help traders.
Thousands of people flock to the town every year for the switch-on ceremony and the Christmas Fayre organised by Brigg District Lions. Crowds then visit the many shops that stay open until 9am for people to carry out Christmas shopping.

BRIGG CHIP FANS: DO YOU WANT SALT WITH YOUR SNOW?

The praiseworthy and extensive treatment of our Brigg pedestrian area by North Lincolnshire Council during the cold snap, to stop us all slipping and sliding on the paving slabs, prompted Ken Harrison to get Stavros, the proprietor of Scalinis chippie, to add a new dimension with a bit of salt-spreading of his own on the snow outside the popular premises in Wrawby Street.
Had the council failed to come up to the mark with spreading the salt/sand, Ken would presumably have posed Stavros with a nice piece of SKATE!

PUTTING YOU IN THE PICTURE ON BRIGG PARKING

In an effort to make our earlier Brigg Blog posting about Bigby Street parking a bit clearer, we've been out and taken these pix. We are suggesting that drivers need to show care and vigilance when making U-turns to park up near the former Post Office and also when pulling out of the lay-bys near what's now the sorting/parcels depot. We wonder whether North Lincolnshire Council road safety or traffic flow experts might take a look. Are there possible grounds for installing some sort of warning sign/signs for the benefit of motorists?  Brigg Blog is NOT suggesting U-turning should be banned or that parking in these lay-bys  should be restricted. But all motorists who use these handy parking spots need to keep their wits about them. Recently I saw a woman driver - sorry, just a statement of fact, not an implied criticism - cause a few concerns for the driver of a 4 x 4 coming down Bigby Street. She was trying to squeeze into one of the marked bays right outside the sorting office and he was coming from the direction of the church. No harm was done, but there's a bend in the road at this point and visibility isn't ideal.

BRIGG ACCIDENTS WAITING TO HAPPEN?

The short stay parking bays on either side of Bigby Street in Brigg - outside the Post Office's parcel/sorting office - are much used and very useful to motorists wishing to visit that facility or to nip to Nisalocal or other nearby shops.
However, the ability to U-turn from the slip road outside Hewson House, across two lanes of traffic into the bays right outside the door of the PO (SEE PICTURE) surely merits safety "reminder" signs of some sort being put up to warn motorists to be on their guard.
For as drivers wait to emerge and U-turn to their right from the slip road, their view is often obscured by cars parked very close by in the bays opposite the Post Office.
Due to the road layout, drivers about to set off from those bays also need to observe traffic behind them (approaching the Zebra crossing along Bigby Road) and traffic that then suddenly appears in front of them on the slip road leading from Albert Street and Hewson House.
We are not suggesting for a moment that the U-turning should be banned, only that there appears to be an accident, or accidents, waiting to happen at this point for the unwary. Therefore it just might be worth Coun Nigel Sherwood, Cabinet Member for Highways and Neighbourhoods, seeking the opinion of North Lincolnshire Council's road safety/traffic flow experts.

Women in the Brigg area are among those being encouraged to get fit.
North Lincolnshire Council says jogging is popular as it’s a cheap and sociable sport.
But  starting out can be difficult.  That’s why the authority has a number of ladies-only jog groups designed especially for beginners.
These are for ladies aged 18 and over and are led by a trained leader who guides, support and motivates the group.  It’s a great way to take regular exercise and meet new friends, without the pressure of competition.
Everyone is welcome to try their first two sessions as a trial before committing to membership.
The jog group is Brigg meets at the Old Courts Road car park (behind the police station) every Tuesday at 5.45pm.
Contact jog leader Michelle on 07717 588192 for further details.
If cycling is more your thing, a number of ladies' cycling groups are being set up across North Lincolnshire.
Designed for novice cyclists, the groups are geared around a friendly, informal network of women.  So if you have a desire to get out on your bike or want more details, call Lee Olivant 07710 258391 or email lee.olivant@northlincs.gov.uk
Councillor John Briggs, Cabinet Member for Asset and Estate Management, Sport, Leisure and Culture, said: “The council are committed to making it easier for everyone to feel the benefits of a healthy lifestyle. These women-only sessions are a great way for ladies to find something they love to do, get fit and enjoy themselves at the same time."

BRIGG TOWN CENTRE IS BAD WEATHER PRIORITY

Brigg Blog has received a snow clearance update.
North Lincolnshire Council says its fleet of gritting trucks was out all weekend helping to keep the area’s roads clear.
A spokesman told us today:
Precautionary and secondary routes have been salted at regular intervals and ploughs have been used on some roads overnight on Saturday and into Sunday afternoon.
Heavily used pedestrian areas in Scunthorpe and Brigg town centres have also been salted.
The council’s nine precautionary routes include principal and main roads, key bus routes, roads to hospitals and schools among others.
Secondary routes include relatively steep hills, heavily used pedestrian areas and local bus routes among others.
For more details visit the gritting routes pages on the council website.
The council has so far not received any reports from any schools that have had to close because of the wintry weather.
Bin and recycling box collections are being carried out as normal today, Monday 6 February, but some properties in Low Burnham have proved inaccessible for the kerbside contractor's lorries.
People are asked to leave any uncollected bins or recycling boxes out where they are easily accessible. They will be collected as soon as it is practical to do so.
Temperatures are likely to remain around freezing for the rest of the week so there is a risk of ice on the roads.
Drivers are urged to take extra care and allow more time for their journeys.
More useful information covering everything from keeping warm to clearing snow and ice from footpaths can be found on the winter service pages of the council website www.northlincs.gov.uk

BRIGG FUNDRAISERS PLAY THEIR PART

Brigg-based fundraisers were involved in a showpiece event celebrating a successful fundraising year which produced more than £2,000 for chosen charities, including Lindsey Lodge Hospice (see picture).
Over the past 12 months, Let's Rock Cancer produced live music events in aid of various cancer charities, supported live music and encouraged talent in North Lincolnshire.
Organisers Sophie Brumby, Danielle Clayton and Brant Clayton, alongside crew members Helen Jaques, Scott Marshall, Brigg’s Coun James Truepenny and Charlie Ward, welcomed esteemed guests from all over North Lincolnshire to celebrate another year of achievement at Let’s Rock Cancer’s Winter Ball.
Guests included North Lincolnshire Mayor Councillor Keith Vickers, of Barton, and representatives from the group’s benefiting charities - MacMillan Cancer Support, St James’ Specialist Cancer Unit in Leeds, the Teenage Cancer Trust and Lindsey Lodge Hospice, Scunthorpe.
They each received an equal share of £2,152 (almost £540 each).
The event at the Wortley Hotel, Scunthorpe, was not just about having a good time.
It featured a charity auction and raffle in support of the group’s good causes and live music from Battle of the Bands champions and runners-up, Missed you at the Show and Lizzie Goddard.
Former Mayor of Brigg Councillor Truepenny told guests: “Let's Rock Cancer has had a busy time since last year's ball.
“Our monthly shows at the Lincoln Imp have brought in talent from as far away as Great Torrington, as well as the supply of great talent available in the Northern Lincolnshire area.
“Our Battle of the Bands was the most competitive ever. It featured a blistering final showdown between Lizzie Goddard and eventual winners Missed you at the Show, who where separated by half a point.
“Through all the good times we had we have never forgotten why we put these things together and it gives us great pride on a day like today when we can give the money to the people who deserve it most for there even harder work.
“This year we hope to keep our regular customers happy with our established series of shows in Scunthorpe - at the Lincoln Imp -and continue to build our reputation and legacy of live music.”
There will be a special show to help raise awareness of, and funds for, the Prostate Cancer Charity.
This year the Battle of the Bands moves back to a regional format, with heats in Gainsborough and Scunthorpe.
Councillor Truepenny, a former Town Mayor of Brigg, said: “As we approach our fifth anniversary year, we can reflect on a period of great achievement and growth and some incredible musical experiences.
“We appreciate everyone’s support over the last 12 months and we hope we can give everyone we are involved with another great year.”

BRIGG DEVELOPMENT PLANS ON AGENDA

Brigg Town Council is about to consider plans submitted to build eight town houses, two maisonettes, four flats and three shops, which will involve the demolition of existing old buildings.
Planning permission is being sought from North Lincolnshire Council by Market Court Developments Ltd,   GSA House, Brigg, for land to the rear of 5 and 6 Market Place.
As part of the planning process, Brigg Town Council must be consulted.
This is the second time these planning applications have appeared on the agenda of the Town Council's Planning and Environment Committee.
On the first occasion, members agreed to defer discussions to give themselves more time to consider things and give councillors further opportunity to view the proposed development site.
The old buildings under threat of demolition are off Cary Lane, between Spencer Molloy's shop and the rear of 7 Market Place - the Brigg office of Ian Cawsey when he was the local MP.
Brigg councillors will consider the applications on Wednesday (Feb 8) during a meeting in the Angel Suite (7pm). This meeting is in the Lounge (downstairs) and is open to the public.
It should be stressed that the final decision on whether to grant planning approval rests with North Lincolnshire Council.
Following that meeting, members of the public will also be welcome to sit in at a meeting of Brigg Town Council's Property and Services Committee, in the Angel Suite Lounge, from 7.45pm.
This will include updates on Brigg's two allotment sites, the Angel Suite and the Christmas lights.

KEEP BRIGG NEIGHBOURHOODS CAR THEFT FREE

Brigg motorists have received sound advice from Ken Bates - once the high-ranking chief of police for the Scunthorpe division, now Neighbourhood Watch Development Officer.
Ken has issued the following warning:
There have been three instances in the past week (in Scunthorpe and the rural areas) where residents have been clearing their car windscreens of ice in the morning. The resident has left their car engine running outside whilst they went into their home to collect papers etc.. Whilst inside the house an offender has entered the vehicle and driven off in it . I know this sounds like a very careless thing to do, but in such circumstances people don't think it will happen to them. DON'T BE CAUGHT OUT.  Stay with your vehicle while it is unlocked and the engine running - particularly if parked on the road, there are thieves about looking for such opportunities.

WILL YOU HELP WITH BRIGG SPRING CLEAN?

Brigg Spring Clean
Saturday 26th May

From Jeanette Woollard, Clerk - Brigg Town Council

Plans are once again underway to hold a Spring Clean Day in the Town, but the date for this year’s event is one week later than usual, due to the delayed National Bank Holiday to mark the Diamond Jubilee.
The Diamond Jubilee weekend in Brigg will commence with the LincSquad Adventure Challenge on Sunday 3rd June. A Voluntary Committee has also recently been formed to organise further events and entertainment for the community, on either Monday 4th or Tuesday 5th June. The week will then conclude with the Brigg Summer Fair, now organised annually by Brigg and District Lions, in the Market Place and the Town Centre on Sunday 10th June.
The Town Council is already making plans for bunting to be erected throughout the Town. The Town’s traders have been asked to consider erecting individual Union Flags outside their shops, and the hanging baskets will reflect the red, white and blue theme. All of these initiatives will ensure that the Town is suitably decorated in readiness for the celebrations, but will undoubtedly be spoiled if the Town and the River are full of litter and look generally unkempt!

CAN YOU SPARE SOME TIME TO HELP?

There will be two clean up sessions on Saturday 26th May 2012, when the main aim will be to target the river, the river side and the Town Centre. Other locations which have been identified as ‘in need of a targeted response’ will also be considered, depending on the manpower available.
Both sessions will commence with a health and safety briefing at the Angel Suite and light refreshments will be provided back at the Angel Suite, after each clean up session.
Assemble at the Angel Suite for:

Health and safety briefing 10am; clean-up session 10.30am-12.30pm
Health and safety briefing 2pm, clean-up session 2.30pm to 4.30pm.

Clearly, the more manpower that is available the more that can be done and I, therefore, hope that you will be able to pledge your assistance at one of the clean-up sessions; and that you will also spread the word and encourage others to come forward and help too. Please use the attached reply slip to indicate which session(s) you will be able to attend, and return it to the Town Council Office as soon as possible.
Thanking you in anticipation of your support.

Please contact the Town Council Office, The Angel Suite, Exchange Place, Brigg, DN20 8LD. Tel 01652 659402.  E.Mail: enquiries@briggmarkettown.co.uk

BRIGG TESCO - FIRM REPLY

A Tesco spokesman has provided the following response to Brigg Town Council, in reply to the question raised at the last Town Council meeting, and recent public speculation that plans for the new store have been shelved in favour of the previous plan to extend the existing store.
Tesco says: “The company is still progressing its intention to build a new store in Brigg, in accordance with the plans recently approved.”

LET'S ENSURE BRIGG 'BOOKS' THE TREND

Brigg Blog wants to flag up a worthy initiative aimed at getting more people to read books.
In the age of the Kindle, online news and features, social networking and multi-purpose mobile phones, many of us still like to read books.
But there's a danger that today's youngsters may miss out on the joy of books.
We need to ensure that they turn over a new leaf and don't just read on the screen.
So the Bookstart reading programme is inviting people to get involved in its 20th anniversary celebrations by making a simple pledge: to share 20 books in 2012.
Bookstart provides free books to babies, toddlers and three-year-olds, and has given out more than 30 million books to children around the country since its launch in 1992.
Councillor Patricia Bradwell (pictured below), Executive Member for Children’s Services at Lincolnshire County Council, told us: “Bookstart helps give every child a flying start in life. Books are a great way to bond with your child and beneficial for their emotional well-being and future learning. That’s why we want as many people as possible to join in the celebrations by sharing 20 books in 2012.
“You might do this by sharing picture books with your own children, grandchildren, nieces or nephews at bedtime. Alternatively, you might want to share books by reading to children in a local school or a library. The choice is yours.”
A number of famous authors and celebrities have already given the project their backing, including: Jacqueline Wilson, Michael Morpurgo, Julia Donaldson, Frank Cottrell Boyce, Joanna Trollope, Michael Rosen, Hugh Dennis and Kirsty Wark.
People can show their support by picking up a ‘pledge postcard’ at their local library. Alternatively, you can make the pledge online at www.booktrust.org.uk - where you can also find out more about the Bookstart programme.
Our picture above shows the Oxfam book shop, in Wrawby Street, Brigg.
