MORE YELLOW LINES COMING TO BRIGG ?

Additional yellow lines to stop parking on side streets in Brigg could be on the way.
North Lincolnshire Council staff have undertaken a summer "consultation" on Traffic Regulation Orders.
We think this is a "sounding out" process prior to proposals being drawn up for consideration by the powers-that-be at North Lincolnshire Council who will then say Yes or No.

POSSIBLY GETTING ADDED RESTRICTIONS
Almond Grove - No Waiting At Any Time  extended as far as the junction with Birch Avenue.
West Terrace, Forrester Street, Manley Gardens - various sections.
Wrawby Street - lay-by.
Elwes Street - a further section (we think near the Bottlings/Ancholme Gardens)..
Cary Lane - a further section.
Grammar School Road - a further section.
Cary Lane - Wilkinson's store/taxi business end.

A Brigg Town Council committee has been consulted and taken a look at maps provided (of which Brigg Blog does not have copies).
Town councillors have told North Lincolnshire Council highways that they are concerned the Cary Lane taxi business could be "disadvantaged" by the proposed additional parking restrictions.
Town councillors would also like highways staff to take another look at the exit from Glanford Court, off Grammar School Road, where visibility is very poor, due to parked vehicles.
We've saved perhaps the most interesting till last: The parking bays on Bigby Street (between Hewson House and the Post Office).
You may recall that, in a welcome move, motorists were given 20 minutes to park - possibly to nip into the nearby Nisa Local shop or visit the sorting office to pick up a parcel.
North Lincolnshire Council, it is suggested, may look to extend this 20 minutes to one hour.
The Town Council's planning and environment committee gave the change a mixed response.
Town councillors (collectively) think allowing drivers to park their cars for one hour in the bay immediately opposite the Post Office could be detrimental to the many who just want to park up for a few minutes to pop in for a parcel.
The reason: Longer-stay shoppers - perhaps visiting premises in Wrawby Street - might well monopolise the bay, reducing the opportunities for a quick stop-and-go visit to the sorting office.
Brigg Town Council is happy for the other two bays - further away from the sorting office, closer to Hewson House - being extended to one hour's parking from the current 20 minutes.
We think that once North Lincolnshire highways staff have chewed over the response to their "consultation" and made firm recommendations, the issue of whether Brigg is to get further yellow lines will land on the  desk (or desktop) of our own Councillor Nigel Sherwood, in his role as Cabinet Member for Highways and Neighbourhoods.
If he decides to support any parking restrictions for Brigg, they will have to be advertised by way of official notices and that's when Joe Public can raise any objections.

The original reason for the 20 minute parking limit, Scribs, was BTC's concern of heavy congestion at certain times of the day outside Brigg Prep School.
Now BPS has closed and the new special school uses the former front playground for parking, the original issue is no longer valid.
The 20 mins parking bays were not primarily put there to allow folks to nip into Nisa, or the PO sorting office. These reasons seemed to be added later and apparently based upon some illogical reasoning.
For example, the parking bays haven't got to be 20 mins to allowing 'nipping' - they can be any length.....drivers who nip into Nisa aren't going to sit around in the car just to claim that they have parked for an hour..There will be still a high turn-over of nipper-inners...but there is also a need longer parking periods for those unfortunate folk visiting the dentist....and etc.

As for the YELLOW LINES - one has to remember the consequences of displacement.
It like a water-bed - squeeze down on one section, and it bulges somewhere else.
Consequently, displace long-term park cars in side streets and the cars will end up in other side streets.
Ban them from Carlton St and they could end up in Albert St, St Helens Road, Island Carr, or the Ancholme LC's car park.
Before going round with a yellow paint brush - has anyone thought to ask what these side-street parkers want? I bet most, if not all are workers in Brigg - unable/or wanting to make a saving on All Day parking charges in Brigg.
Similarly, how many similar people use the rough car parking area near Riverside for the same reason?
Perhaps there is a need to create a free, or cheap car-parking area some distance from the town centre...and with the potential redevelopment of Lidl and Tesco, such an impact will only increase.
It no good offering shoppers free 2 hour parking concessions, and then bullying the shop-workers, office staff of Brigg about their on-street parking habits.
Please think beyond the box.

Suggestion:
Develop the 'tennis court' parking amenity (created for the Diamond Jub) near the Rec into a Free parking area for those needing to park and work in Brigg during the working day.
It could be a win-win situation - it takes a number of on-street parking cars off the side streets and offers a hassle-free car parking space in a zone that is presentlty redundant/moribund.

In addition, the nearby Football Club could offer private car-parking facilities during the day - could bring in some extra cash for the footie players.

The end of me suggestion - take it, or leave it!
