IT'S GOOD TO TALK

It was great to get the chance to talk to 50-plus folk at last night's monthly meeting of Brigg Amateur Social Historians (BASH) on The History of the Scunthorpe Telegraph. Some people were there I hadn't seen for a long time. BASH took their own pictures and will be penning their own report of the proceedings. So you will be able to get the official view on how the talk went down with the audience. When, at the very end, people started walking out it was only to nip next door to the buffet! At least, I think that was the reason.
BASH's Halloween Ghost Walk was reported to have been very successful and enjoyable.
With plenty of change from a £2 coin for a pint of cider at the Brigg Servicemen's Club, I inquired about rejoining as a lapsed member but was told that's not an option at present.
Perhaps I should have mentioned grandad was one of the founders of the establishment!

STOP PRESS

From our unofficial correspondent from a village in northern England:

You sound like Bob Hoskins (cf BT ad of the '90's). or a mother confessor, Scribs.
You're good a talking......don't know if people were listening as they were all getting a bit over-excited with the old copies of the ST you circulated...

Suggested to Phil Allen, who's meant to be doing the official BASH report, that you shoud write your draft posting and we'll give it marks out of foive! (cf Janice Nichols - Juke Box Jury famep)
I think Phil said something about making it an honest report and won't be badgered by members of the press.
I still think that mystery photo was about 1937/38 - it wasn't wartime - no-one was carrying gas-masks and the kerbs weren't painted (often painted white vis-a-vis driving in a blackout); lot's of shops appeared to have flag-poles - possibly suggesting a royal coronation had, or was about to happen....and the fashion and the state of the bus looked from the 30's.
One possible idea that could narrow down the date is to check the trade registers of the 30/40's to examine who was running the shops and when.
Also, show the photo to the Transport Museum guy at Sandtoft and see if he can identify and date the age of the coach.

A couple of years time, Nige, you could give another talk about Brigg Blog.

Anyway, Nige, weren't you one of the founder members of BASH - for awhile known as Basher Bloggs?
