Listening to the radio while driving into Brigg a few weeks ago - before the World Cup kicked off - I was surprised to hear repeated references to the little German striker whose clever back-header helped knock England out at the semi-final stage in Mexico in 1970. But it turned out the radio pundits were not talking about Uwe Zeeler's bitter blow dealt to our chances but some form of cheap and nasty, one-note plastic trumpet.
We've all been paying the penalty ever since!

Nige, the vuvuzela is similar to a plastic horn that's been used in South American footie matches since the late '60's.
The FIFA World Cup was held in Mexico in 1970.
The South American horn-version caused a bit of annoyance in the 1978 series - held in Argentina......but England failed to qualify..(I think they also failed to qualify in '74)..and may explain why folks think the vuvuzela a bit of a novelty. For example, Argentina beat The Neatherlands in the final.
ps Lord Haw-Haw = William Joyce - hanged for treason.........but Lord Cardigan....the guy who led the charge of the ill-fated Light Brigade was the original, 'Lord Haw-Haw......it wouldn't be the same wearing woolly haw-haws!
