PAYING TWICE

A Brigg town councillor has admitted her surprise at a scheme being operated in North Lincolnshire which allows parish and town councils to hire 'flashing' signs to deter speeding motorists.
Coun Tom Glossop, chairman of the Brigg Neighbourhood Policing Panel, gave brief details at the town council's monthly meeting in the Angel Suite.
But that promoted Coun Jenny Bell to suggest Brigg people had already paid for the signs, through their council tax, and yet would now have to pay again 'to hire them back'.

Can they make sure these flash at the right moments? The one entering Wrawby from the Barnetby direction goes off even if you do about 30mph (the limit is 40).

And those "Slow Down" signs at the Scawby/Broughton/A18 crossroads have simply led to people pulling out from the Scawby direction to think even more than before that they have a right to pull out in front of people travelling on the A18 - the speed limit on which IS still 60mph....

Sorry, AlisonK, but the speed limit along Wrawby Road IS 30 MPH - it was reduced some years ago.
BUT, I agree, the 'Flasher' goes off at about 26mph - (according to my sat nav - which is more accurate that the avarage speedo)

I don't mean there, I mean further down the hill (back towards Barnetby), where the sign clearly says 40 but the sign goes off at - well, we haven't managed to make it not go off yet!

Sorry, AlisonK, my mistake, misread your comments.

However, along Melton Road/Brigg Road - the A18 in Wrawby there are three speed limits - the National, a 40mph and a 30mph past the church.

The '40 Flasher'(from the Barnetby direction) does go off - from about half a mile away - a speed of about 35mph seems to activate it.
If you've got a sat nav - check the speed, as speedos are generally designed to show a higher speed than actual by about 4mph.

Consequently, if the 'Flasher' is activated at about 35 mph actual speed, and with many drivers assuming their speedo are correct -speeds can be disproportionately reduced. Combined with other drivers who are aware of their 'correct' speed - this can give the impression of a mix of speeding and dawdling drivers.

If warning speed 'Flashers' are used, then they must be accurate - otherwise it can increase the danger of drivers assessing their own speeds to compensate for the indicate inaccuate 'flashed' speed.

But there remains a question - if Brigg TC is hiring their 'Flasher'. who owns the Wrawby 'Flasher'?

As for the Scawby/Broughton X-Roads with the A18...phew!
They have always seemed a bit dodgy.
At the warning sign give drivers on the the A18 advance warning of the X-roads. I can remember some years ago a whole string of accidents at the site.
But, in my opinion the warning sign is not the complete answer.
The x-roads is a semi-blind juctions - ie observations are restricted by hedges etc.
The side roads can carry farily heavy traffic at certain time of the day and duing the rush-hours, the whole area is busier than Clapham Junction - cars suddenly braking as the car in front wants to turn right from the A18; drivers meadering around such cars and moving into the side roads to overtake on the inside.
Once, I tried to turn right from Scawby onto the A18 at rush hour (about 5.15pm), it took 9 and half minutes during which time my head was going like an over-active robot watching traffic from the right, left and front!
At other times of the day - the x-roads seems to assume a character of juction along a quiet country road.
